Afro-Futurism Artist Statement

For my project, I decided to focus more on color symbolism rather than past, present, and future. I felt like my past, present, and future images were boring, but I did end up using the image of the viola mainly because I liked the aesthetic of it (also because I used to play it). I also thought the aesthetic of the viola would fit the peaceful vibe I was trying to achieve. Other than that the colors I used were purple and green, I picked them because they’re my favorite colors. But also, purple represents spirituality, imagination, mystery, and royalty. Although, the purple shows up as more violet in my piece. Green also resembles harmony, health, safety, and growth. The things those colors represent are things I’d like to see in my life. I didn’t use too many images in my collage because I couldn’t find the specific things I was looking for. I thought about illustrating some of the images I couldn’t find on google, but I was running out of time and was trying to finish (I think it would’ve been cool if I went along with that though). So my piece is just clovers, purple flowers, and violas. I feel like it’s a little confusing but overall it’s supposed to represent peace and growth (which my colors also kind of represent). The last touch I made was blocking out my eyes with the sky. I planned to do something like hiding my eyes, and I got the idea of cutting out two circles from the background and placing them on the lens of my glasses. I liked that idea, however I think they should have been the same in both lenses. Overall, I think my project is decent but like always I do wish I could have done things differently (mainly with my selection of images and layout).
