Food Truck Design – Artist Statement

My idea for this project was to go for a sweet theme with lots of pastels. As usual I kind of deviated from that but still the core of the concept is the same. My truck is for milkshakes and smoothies (with maybe some other foods, but mainly those drinks). I named it Sunnyside Sweets because it fits the bright theme I was going for (and the alliteration). For the design I limited my color scheme to light blue and yellow and I think that also plays into the title ‘sunnyside’, the blue symbolizing the sky and the yellow for the sun). I also limited the graphics to use because I couldn’t find many (mainly graphics of the food) that fit what I was going for. When I added the ones I originally picked onto the truck it just looked out of place to me. So I stuck with the sun and an image of a milkshake. I used the sun to be the background for the title so that it would kind of stand out, without it the title seemed to disappear and look boring. I wanted to add the silhouettes of the truck interior but I was running of time so I left that out. So I would go back and add that as well as touch up the bottom version of the truck (I used the brush tool and in a png it doesn’t look as clean). I like my finished design though.

Short Film (Dear Younger Me) – Artist Statement

I’ve finally finished my short film and while it was fun it was frustrating at times. I originally started editing in Kapwing but I gave up with it because I remember it was being slow or lagging a lot, and I was trying to get work done that night so I decided to switch to another software. I ended up using Cyberlink Powerdirector, a video editing software that came installed on my computer which I was already pretty familiar with. However, it is a bit old I think so the features look kind of outdated (but my video was pretty basic, so it didn’t matter much). My original idea for the short film involved me doing some animation but I just scraped that because I wasn’t confident enough in it because I haven’t animated in a while and didn’t think I could do that fast enough. Also my b-roll footage are just some videos I have on my phone (2017-now). The idea or story is still the same, that I get a letter in the mail from the future. I used those videos mainly to save time but also because I think it adds to the reminiscent element; actually looking back at younger me (also kind of goes along with the narration). The footage that progresses the plot is at the end (along with the brief clip of future me writing the letter in the beginning of the video). Overall, I think it came out decent with what I had, but the main thing I don’t like is the audio. I would go back and redo my voiceover, the mic on my computer made it sound weird.

I can’t add the video onto this post so I uploaded it to the shared google drive folder ‘FutureSelfVideo.’

Food Truck [Day 3]

The last 2 days I was unsure of my design and I kept adding to what I had in day 1, as well as searching for more graphics. I wasn’t a fan of how the graphics I picked out looked on the truck, so I decided to change the design a bit. It’s more simple than what I was going for. The truck may not have a lot of graphics on it, maybe like 2 images of the drinks. I changed the colors a little, still blue and yellow, but I made the background color of the truck blue and the yellow coming from the graphic of the sun. I think it resembles the sky and plays into the title of the food truck; “Sunnyside Sweets.” I wanted to add a third color for the pastel like theme, maybe in the font, but it didn’t seem to stand out so I just made it white. Lastly I made the doors yellow because the all blue looked too plain.

Indirect Portrait Remix: Artist Statement

Fir my remix I chose a photo of someone’s wall with notes and papers posted on it. At first I wasn’t sure what to go, I initially thought about just recreating the picture with my own photo, but I settled on taking the image into Photopea and remixing it by rearranging the post-its on the wall. I had to figure out how to clear the wall so I could put the rearrangement on top. I wasn’t exactly sure how to do that but I just colored over the papers with the color that the wall was (if that makes sense) so that I would have an empty wall. I then traced over the papers with the pen tool and once I finished tracing them all I moved them around. The tracings aren’t super neat because that would’ve been time consuming and I wasn’t really going for a super realistic look. I decided on arranging the papers into a heart, and that took a while because I had so many layers, but in the end I did it and it came out okay I think (a little uneven). I also had to duplicate a couple of the papers so that I could fill in some gaps. This was rushed so it could have been better, I could’ve added some shadows underneath the post-its and maybe some highlights to show change in lighting.

Short Film Storyboarding (4/9)

I wasn’t really sure what the specifics of my story or concept would be before I started the storyboard, but all I did know is that I didn’t want it to be too simple. Since I didn’t really have a set idea I just decided to draw whatever scenes/ideas for the storyboard that came to mind. As I did that my story started to come together. My film starts with a scene where I’m walking in the park and I meet myself from the future. That part is supposed to be a dream I had and it will be animated (partially to make up for the fact that I want two versions of myself in the same frame, and I guess it could help establish that the scene is not reality). From there it’s mostly b-roll footage of me doing random tasks or things in my room or around my house which is supposed to convey a sense of boredom. While the b-roll footage is playing I plan on using a voiceover of the letter from my future self, that is up until the scene where I check the mail and see that I received a letter from myself (from the future). The letter I get is supposed to be like reassurance or encouragement to my current self, so the last scene or two after I get the letter I want to convey that. I haven’t finished the storyboard, I haven’t drawn the last scene or two but an idea I had was to show a clip of me walking in the same park that I was in the opening scene (minus running into future me).

Short Film Brainstorming (4/6)

What Will Your Life Look Like in Ten Years?

I imagine that my career would involve art (illustration or graphic design) and maybe I’ll be starting a business of some sort. I think I will still be living in New York state but I would hope that I moved somewhere outside of Rochester. Maybe my friends will be a couple of people I met from college. I think my hopes and dreams are pretty much the same as they are now (or adjacent) because I know what fields I don’t want to go into and I just want to in a comfortable position. I think that I would have accomplished graduating college, starting my graphic design/illustration career, moved out, and again have some sort of business that gained a decent level of support or success. But in general I don’t think my life would have taken too much of a turn (in regards to my path). I don’t think I would have any significantly fond memories of high school because I didn’t do much or anything exciting. I think my values wouldn’t have changed (at least too much), I think I would just be more mature. Lastly, for any new skills I would have acquired post-graduation maybe sewing (because I’m learning that now) and I got better at it, or maybe better at public speaking/being less shy or nervous when speaking to people (specifically bigger groups).

Afro-Futurism Artist Statement

For my project, I decided to focus more on color symbolism rather than past, present, and future. I felt like my past, present, and future images were boring, but I did end up using the image of the viola mainly because I liked the aesthetic of it (also because I used to play it). I also thought the aesthetic of the viola would fit the peaceful vibe I was trying to achieve. Other than that the colors I used were purple and green, I picked them because they’re my favorite colors. But also, purple represents spirituality, imagination, mystery, and royalty. Although, the purple shows up as more violet in my piece. Green also resembles harmony, health, safety, and growth. The things those colors represent are things I’d like to see in my life. I didn’t use too many images in my collage because I couldn’t find the specific things I was looking for. I thought about illustrating some of the images I couldn’t find on google, but I was running out of time and was trying to finish (I think it would’ve been cool if I went along with that though). So my piece is just clovers, purple flowers, and violas. I feel like it’s a little confusing but overall it’s supposed to represent peace and growth (which my colors also kind of represent). The last touch I made was blocking out my eyes with the sky. I planned to do something like hiding my eyes, and I got the idea of cutting out two circles from the background and placing them on the lens of my glasses. I liked that idea, however I think they should have been the same in both lenses. Overall, I think my project is decent but like always I do wish I could have done things differently (mainly with my selection of images and layout).

Last Day on Afro-Futurism Project

I was a bit behind in what I was going to do with my project. I felt like the objects I picked didn’t really go together so I tried to reorganize the layout and repick some photos. For example the purple stone I was going to use got taken out because I didn’t know what to do with it an it was kind of just floating. I also shrank the size of my selfie to leave more room at the top for something extra and just because I think it would look nicer. the I kind of wanted to cover part of my face, so I brought in an image that was on my brainstorming slides (it was a green paint stroke) and used it to cover my eyes. Didn’t really like it but I’ll see if it comes together as I work. I also thought about doing an outline or shadow behind my portrait, So I did a quick purple outline by drawing on a layer underneath my photo.
