Afrofuturism Checkpoint

So far I’m just removing backgrounds for other photos so I can assemble them in Photopea. I had to go back and find other photos since I didn’t pick out the right ones the first time. So far I’m no really sure that they’re going to look good once I put it together. I’m just gonna keep moving things around and adding more objects if I need to. I was also thinking of illustrating/drawing some of the pieces (not the whole thing) just because I can’t find certain objects I want and I think it could look cool. But I’m not very far along yet, just trying to organize.

Afro-Futurism Self Portrait [Day 1]

Today I started my portrait in Photopea. I ended up using a selfie different from the ones I put in my brainstorming slides and I finished removing the background. Next I need to remove the backgrounds of the objects I found (but I misunderstood the color symbolism assignment, so I need to go back and find photos of objects that fit a color theme). I’m hoping to make the portrait a space or night theme, with pops of color from purple or green. I’m not exactly sure how I’ll incorporate my past, present, and future but I’ll see what ideas come along the way.

Remix Portraits: Project Proposal

For this project I didn’t know what to pick but I settled on one because I like the arrangement of the objects in the photo and I came up with 2 ideas to remix it with. Instead of doing the same thing in this photo (photographing papers/photos on a wall) I’m thinking of finding some objects that show my interests and laying them out on the floor, like a collage (the objects mainly square shaped and laid out kind of similarly so it keeps the essence of the photo). But another idea I had was to use photo editing by cutting out the post-its on the wall, rearranging them into another shape, and either putting that rearrangement on another wall or somehow editing it on the same wall in the photo. I like both ideas but I think the last one is more interesting.

Indirect Self-Portrait

For this assignment I only took a few photos, mainly of the same things but in different angles. The photos show some parts of my room and in the photos I tried to show a more organized view, but because of of the amount of things I have and little space it can get cluttered easily. I tried to show my hobbies by showing my desk and the shelf under my tv because that’s where my entertainment is. I also tend to keep shoeboxes just for if I end up needing to use it for something so I showed that too.

Cereal Box Design: Artist Statement

For my cereal box I came up with the idea of a banana flavored cereal with added strawberry flavor. I wasn’t sure if strawberries would fit because I was going for a jungle theme since bananas are a tropical fruit and monkeys eat them, but I ended up keeping the strawberries. Looking back on it I could have just took out the strawberries. But, my design is based on a jungle and the mascot is a monkey. Overall I think it’s decent, although there are some details I wish I could’ve fixed or added like for example the contents inside the cereal bowl, it doesn’t match the flavor. I was rushing, so I’ll just say that the fruits in the bowl are added and the actual cereal is where the banana/strawberry flavor is. I also was rushing and couldn’t find a maze to use. I actually found a couple but they wouldn’t show up transparent even though they were pngs (I didn’t know how to fix that besides erasing). So instead I just found a maze and traced over it. I fell behind on this project and it could be better.

Cereal Box Design

I fell a bit behind so today I finished up my sketch for the cereal box and I’m just about to start working on it in Photopea. I feel like my design is nice, it looks messy in the sketch though because I was kind of rushing and I figured I could just touch up most of it in Photopea. The design for the front of the box looks like there is a lot going on because it is set in the jungle, so to hopefully fix that when I start it I will focus on the foreground (so just some of the plants, the cereal bowl, and the monkey). Everything else in the background will be not very detailed and I’ll desaturate it. In my google slides I think I said I would use primary colors but I’m using mainly green, and yellow and maybe some red.

Gift Assemblage: Final Statement

For the gift box assemblage assignment I picked 4 items I think I would like to receive. I struggled picking but I ended up with a journal, a water bottle, a mug, and a pack of M&M’s. I chose those things specifically because I kind of wanted it to be like a gift box of thing that could be used for comfort or self care (the water bottle to hydrate, a mug just because its fun and to drink tea/coffee/hot chocolate, M&M’s because I enjoy them, and a journal just to write or draw whatever in). The color scheme ended up being yellow and grey because I think they go decent together, and I would’ve done purple and yellow but I felt like it was too much on the eyes given the concept I was going for. I also chose the wooden box because I liked how it looked. I had to arrange the gifts a few times to get a layout I liked, and I added some extra shadows on (and under) the items so it looks a little more realistic in the box.

Gift Assemblage Project

I was struggling a bit to think of items to use in this project, but I finally found 4 to use. I kind of based my choices of of something I would want to receive as a gift. I chose a pack of M&M’s (because they are one of my favorite candies), a journal, a mug, and a water bottle. They all fit a color scheme of yellow and grey because I thought they fit well together. I was going to go with yellow and purple because they are complimentary but I felt like it was too much on the eye and I wanted it to look a bit peaceful if that makes sense. I say that because the box consists of things could be used for comfort: the mug to drink coffee/tea, the journal to write whatever in it, the M&M’s because I like them, and the water bottle as a reminder to hydrate/take care. But that is what I ended up with (I have yet to put them into the gift box in Photopea but that shouldn’t be hard), but I think I’m going to use the wooden box for the gifts because I like how it looks.

Fashion Design Project: Starting Final

So today I starting the drawing in my sketchbook where I’m gonna do the finished piece. I was contemplating if I wanted to do this digitally but I think I’ll stick to traditional. I’m going to color it with gouache paint. I’m thinking of mixing traditional with digital just by taking a picture of the painted drawing and putting it into a digital collage.

(I’ll upload a better photo)

Fashion Design Project: Brainstorming

For my project I came up with the idea of palm trees to inspire the dress I’m going to design. I was also thinking of doing ancient Greek architecture but for now I think I’m going to stick with palm trees. The dress will be long to encapsulate the height of the trees, and the top half of the dress will have green feathers or tulle to kind of mimic the leaves. The bottom half will probably be brown to mimic the bark.
